Describe the activity of your company / work

Currently I work as a hand-made leather accessories designer on two fronts. The first one is focused on B2B and collabs and the second one is for a new brand I am currently launching. I also work as a teacher in my online course where I share my experiences on handmade leather working with more students.

Atualmente eu trabalho como designer de acessórios produzidos manualmente em couro em duas frentes. A primeira é para o B2B e collabs e a segunda é para uma nova marca que eu estou lançando. Também trabalho como professor no meu curso on-line onde ensino sobre o trabalho manual com o couro e compartilho as minhas experiências com os alunos.​

What inspired you to enter this field.

I don't come from a family of craftsmen or people in the leather business, but entering the world of leather and the universe of leather handwork was very natural for me. One day I lost my wallet and couldn't find a wallet I liked in the mall, so I decided to make one for myself and that was my first contact with leather handcrafts.

A minha entrada no mundo do couro ou no universo do trabalho manual com o couro foi muito natural. Eu não venho de uma família de artesãos ou pessoas do mercado do couro, porém um dia eu perdi a minha carteira e não encontrei no shopping uma carteira que me agradasse. Decidi então fazer uma para mim e assim tive o meu primeiro contato com o trabalho manual com o couro.
 

When did you first realise you wanted to pursue a career in leather crafting?

I have admired leather as a raw material since I was a child. Leather always gave me, even at a very young age, an idea of quality. When I made my first leather wallet, despite knowing nothing about leather, I fell in love with the raw material, the possibilities of use, the variety, and when I learned a little more about the process it made perfect sense to me. Very soon after I made my first wallet for my own use, people started requesting me to make it for them, and an interesting demand naturally emerged. But it is worth mentioning that I turned them all down because it was a lot of work and it took me about seven days to complete it. 

Desde criança eu admirava o couro como matéria prima. O couro sempre me passou, mesmo muito novo, uma ideia de qualidade. Quando fiz a minha primeira carteira em couro, mesmo sem saber nada sobre couro eu me apaixonei pela matéria prima, pelas possibilidades de uso, pela variedade e quando eu aprendi um pouco mais sobre a cadeia produtiva tudo fez muito sentido para mim. Pouco tempo depois de fazer essa primeira carteira para uso pessoal, algumas pessoas começaram a pedir para eu fazer uma para elas e naturalmente foi surgindo uma demanda interessante. Vale mencionar que eu neguei as propostas porque tinha me dado muito trabalho e levei 7 dias para fazê-la.
 

When did you decide to start teaching others how to make leather products via your online courses?

Credit must go to Nanda, my wife, and to my sister-in-law Rafaela. For a long time they encouraged me to share the knowledge with other people, but at the time I thought I was too busy with another business until one day I said: ok, let's try it. And it worked out very well, the online model was perfect so we started the first online course on leatherworking in Brazil and today we have more than a thousand students in our on-line course.

O crédito tem que ir para a Nanda, minha esposa e para a minha cunhada Rafaela. Durante muito tempo elas me incentivaram a compartilhar o conhecimento com outras pessoas. mas na época eu achava que estava muito ocupado com o novo empreendimento até que um dia eu disse: ok, vamos tentar. E deu muito certo, o modelo online foi perfeito e assim começamos o primeiro curso online sobre trabalho em couro do Brasil e hoje temos mais de mil alunos no nosso curso.​

How would you describe your passion for leather? Why is it such a unique material?

I don't know any other raw material that has so many great features as leather: beauty, durability, performance, heat exchange, resistance, comfort, sustainability, etc. When I need leather to be rigid, that’s it, when I need it to be malleable, that’s it, when I need it to be extremely thin, that’s it, when I need a lot of thickness, that’s it. Leather is a noble and special raw material.

 

Eu desconheço uma matéria prima que tenha tantas características como o couro: beleza, durabilidade, performance, troca de calor, resistência, conforto, sustentabilidade, etc.

Quanto eu preciso que o couro seja rígido ele é, quando eu preciso que o couro seja maleável ele é, quando eu preciso que seja extremamente fino ele é, quando preciso de muita espessura ele tem. O couro é uma matéria prima nobre e especial.
 

What is the most satisfying thing about teaching leather work?

I can confidently say that today what pleases me the most is to see new artisans coming up with authorial work, with personality and quality and see people developing their manual and natural skills and making this experience a reality more confident in themselves.

Posso dizer com segurança que hoje o que mais me satisfaz é ver novos artesãos surgindo com um trabalho autoral, com personalidade e qualidade e também ver pessoas desenvolvendo suas habilidades manuais e naturais e fazendo dessa experiência uma realidade com mais confiança nelas mesmas.
 

What is the most valuable thing you learned from the students?

I found that it is by teaching that one truly learns and understands about something. You have to empty yourself in order to be filled with new things. I stayed many years locked inside the atelier, working alone, making a lot of mistakes and learning, testing. When I started teaching, the speed of evolution was tremendous. What I learned with my students is that the techniques, the tools, and the leather will be the same, but the great differential is within each artisan. The beauty of the work will be always materialised from the inside out and each one will always have something unique and new as long as they are honest and sincere with the creation.

Eu descobri que é ensinando que realmente aprendemos e entendemos algo. É preciso esvaziar-se para preencher-se. Fiquei muitos anos fechado dentro do ateliê, trabalhando sozinho, errando e aprendendo muito, fazendo testes. Quando comecei a ensinar, a velocidade da evolução foi incrível. O que eu aprendi com meus alunos é que as técnicas, as ferramentas, e o couro vão se equiparar, mas o grande diferencial está dentro de cada artesão. A beleza do trabalho será sempre materializada de dentro para fora e cada um sempre terá algo único e novo desde que seja honesto e sincero com a criação.

What is your favourite part about being a leather designer/crafter?

Creation is without a doubt my favourite part. Materialising some thought or idea can sometimes be a quick and natural process and other times it is painful for me, but it is always fulfilling.

A criação é a minha parte preferida sem dúvida. Materializar algum pensamento ou idéia às vezes é um processo rápido e natural, às vezes é doloroso para mim, mas sempre é realizador.
 

Where do you get your inspiration from?

My inspiration comes from my day-to-day life outside the atelier, from the things I like to do such as fighting Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, cycling, surfing, skateboarding, music, art, etc. I believe that unconsciously I am constantly capturing diverse information such as colour combinations, design, movement, and then I am able to use it in my creations.

Minha inspiração vem do meu dia a dia fora do ateliê, nas coisas que eu gosto de fazer como lutar jiu jitsu, ciclismo, surf, skateboard, music, art, etc. Eu acredito que inconscientemente fico constantemente capturando informações diversas como combinações de cores, design, movimentos e depois as uso nas minhas criações.
 

What should a consumer need to know about leather?

I believe that most people do not have correct information about leather and have also been influenced in a wrong way about raw materials like plastic and rubber. The first point should be to raise awareness about meat consumption and leather production. It is absurd that in 2022 there will be people who think that animal slaughter is related to leather in cattle. Leather is a by-product of the food industry. Another important point is for people to know about the sustainability of leather. There is a taboo that leather is not sustainable and this is due to a complete misinformation. I believe that for a long period of time the leather producing industry remained silent while the synthetic industry made a lot of wrong propaganda about its material, and even though the leather industry knew that it was not as they were saying, the population due to lack of information believed and somehow formed a wrong opinion about leather.

Eu acredito que a maioria das pessoas não têm uma informação correta sobre o couro e além disso foram influenciadas de uma maneira equivocada sobre matérias primas como plástico e borracha. O primeiro ponto deveria ser a conscientização sobre o consumo de carne e a produção de couro. É um absurdo que em 2022 tenham pessoas que achem que o abate animal está relacionado ao couro em bovinos. O couro é um subproduto da indústria alimentícia. Outro ponto importante é as pessoas saberem sobre a sustentabilidade do couro. Existe um tabu que o couro não é sustentável e isso é por completa falta de informação. Eu acho que por um grande período a indústria produtora de couro ficou sem pronunciamento enquanto a indústria do sintético fez muita propaganda errada sobre o seu material, e mesmo a indústria do couro sabendo que não era como estavam falando deixou que a população por falta de informação acreditasse e de certa forma formasse uma opinião errada sobre o couro.
 

What are your future plans?

I am developing a new brand that will have leather as one of its main raw materials. Besides some other collaboration projects that are already in progress and partnerships with other brands.

Estou desenvolvendo uma nova marca que terá o couro como uma das principais matérias primas. Além de alguns outros projetos de collabs que já estão em andamento e parcerias com algumas marcas.
